Winter is coming and unless you want to look like a grotesque White Walker, you need to get on that winter skin care. Winter beauty is hard. Your skin does so many ugly things between the months of November and April it’s difficult to keep up with them all. There’s the flaking, then the cracking, all happening over top dryness and dullness. Breakouts never take a break, either. With the chaos of dry winter skin, you need some expert skin care tips to keep healthy skin and a beautiful complexion. If you want to have nice skin for the annual family Christmas picture, start planning now. There are a lot of beauty products and skin care regimens out there for winter skin care. Here are some of my favorite skin care tips I’ve gathered over the years to get you started.
FOR THE DRY DAYS
It may seem silly, but when it comes time to pick a winter moisturizer, pick one that comes in a tub or jar. Pump bottle versions often come with more oil than water content, which is ultimately more hydrating. For long-lasting winter beauty, take a mixing bowl from the kitchen and whip up some creamy moisturizer for a good, thorough coating.
If you want a skin care regimen you can apply briefly each day, add oil to your daily routine. Coconut oil is one of the most popular choices for body and hair. For sensitive skin, try something noncomedogenic like argan oil. You can also mix it with your usual body moisturizer if you’re nervous about how it will sit on your skin.
You can use winter face cream to make your face better, but during a busy day, the cream will never sit there very long. Try putting on a hydrogel mask before you go to bed. The mask will regenerate and exfoliate as you get a night’s rest. Winter beauty sleep can be real with this little skin care tip.
Itchy skin? Grind a cup of plain oatmeal to a powder and add it to a bath full of water. This beauty tip may sound like a swim in your breakfast, but it’s actually pretty amazing. Oatmeal, believe it or not, soothes dry winter skin and inflammation so you can head out with healthy and fresh.
ILLUMINATOR OR HIGHLIGHTER
If your skin needs a pick-me-up, grab a dropper and add a little shimmer to your winter moisturizer. While the lotion works on your skin, the highlighter will give it a sparkle and shine to revitalize the look as well as the pores. No more dull-looking skin after this beauty tip!
BARRIER REPAIR CREAM
It sounds intimidating, but this is just a fancy way of saying ‘cream that repairs your flaky winter skin.’ Dry winter skin can be painful if you don’t take care of it quickly. Find a barrier repair cream to tackle the cracks and irritations on your hands and face. This is key to feeling comfortable as well as looking good this winter.
HOMEMADE LIP SCRUB
If you take some coconut oil, manuka honey, and raw sugar, you can cure some dry winter skin and chapped lips with a bit of homeopathic magic. This is Kardashian approved, but more importantly, I’ve tried it and seen amazing results. Blend the ingredients together, apply, and then rinse off with a warm washcloth.
Skin care regimens for your dry winter skin aren’t hard to find and some can even be made with ease. Whether you’re scrounging in the kitchen or perusing the drugstore beauty aisle, take a few moments to really focus on winter beauty these next few months. Your skin will thank you.
