How a garment looks walking down the runway is important. Similarly, it’s crucial that designer outfits look incredible on red carpets, in high-end photo shoots, and at your own fanciest events. But in the modern, Instagram-friendly age, it is critical that outfits photograph well as part of eye-catching street style ensembles. That’s just the way of the world. Valentino‘s latest lookbook embraces our cultural obsession with colorful, creative, and quirky street styles, and for its Valentino Resort 2019 collection showcase, the brand chose to capture photos of the looks walking the city rather than the catwalk.
The imagery reminds us of Balenciaga’s recent spring campaign, that called upon paparazzi photographers to capture looks out and about on top starlets. But this one is less frenzied than the photo flashbulbs and shielded faces. It reads more like an Instagram star’s camera roll for a travel blog, and an aspirational one that we all want to channel ourselves.
Though the Valentino Resort 2019 collection lookbook was shot in Rome, Italy, it does not showcase the classical scenery or tourist attractions of the historical city. Instead, the contemporary backdrops featured are Italian parks, graffiti-sprawled buildings, and tucked-away storefronts where the models walk on real-life paths, curbs, and side alleys.
“Baroque, Pasolini, angels, pagans—in all these layers together lies the beauty of Roma,” Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli told Vogue of the inspiration at work here. “There is a harmony of many things.”
