Street Food Cinema

Street Food Cinema Event Details

Launched in 2012, Street Food Cinema is more than just an outdoor movie. It’s an experience. Bringing together the best in pop culture films, gourmet street food and progressive new music, Street Food Cinema reinvents the traditional movie going experience. Every element is carefully curated to develop the unique atmosphere that makes audiences want to come back again and again.
Now, independently, each critical element – outdoor movies, food trucks, and music – dates back generations.
Music. It’s been around for more than 50,000 years.
Cut to: 1872, the first mobile kitchen was literally a covered wagon that served sandwiches. By the late 1880’s, lunch wagons like The Owl became more commonplace.
Not long afterwards, motion pictures were developed and quickly grew as an exciting new industry. Cut to: 1933, the first outdoor movie originated, but by the 1950’s they were hugely popular. When the first inflatable screen was invented in 1994, it enabled “pop up” movie screenings with near cinematic quality.
Round this all up to 2008, Chef Roy Choi turned food trucks on their head with the launch of Kogi in Los Angeles. This sparked the gourmet street food trend.
In 2010, recognizing the rising popularity of food trucks and their love for movies and music, event producers Heather Hope-Allison and Steve Allison partnered with a vending company to produce events with food trucks and invited local bands to perform as well. They experimented with the concept for almost two years.
Then, in 2012, they restructured, fine-tuned and threw everything they had into the first season of Street Food Cinema to produce the best outdoor movies in Los Angeles. On May 26th, Street Food Cinema opened with over 1,500 attendees at Exposition Park.
In 2014, the producers created Yuletide Cinema, an indoor holiday adaption of the Street Food Cinema format, for the historical theater environment resurging in Downtown Los Angeles.
As of 2015, Street Food Cinema is now the largest outdoor movie series in Los Angeles with over 50 events throughout 11 locations from Pasadena to the Pacific Palisades.
