Olivia Rodrigo: How to Steal Her Iconic Gen-Z Style

Has there ever been someone that fit the term “It-Girl” as well as Disney sweetheart Olivia Rodrigo? Her name is heard on repeat in the media, whether talking about her award-winning music (Here at Richard Magazine, we’ve had SOUR on repeat for days!), the drama surrounding it, and now even her impeccable style.

Olivia incorporates the 90s and early ‘aughts in stylish and ultra-trendy way. The brunette’s style is a perfect amalgamation of the current Zoomer trends, mixed with a bit of something special. Sustainable sweetness, swirled with a hint of an edginess underneath, just like Olivia’s music.

While her celebrity status allows her haute couture pieces with high price tags, one of the best parts of Olivia’s style is its general approachability. Other celebrities tend to have looks difficult to emulate in everyday life, but Olivia is different. Let’s have a peek at some of Olivia Rodrigo’s best style moments as well as how to get the look.

Olivia loves paying homage to early 2000s divas with her looks. In an Instagram post on January 12, right after her debut single Driver’s License blew up, Olivia posed in a sequin butterfly crop top with matching blue graphic shadow. While the top is a vintage Y2K sequin halter cropped butterfly top purchased from Depop, the look can be found with similar pieces.

While fast fashion brands have not been fast enough to create this stylish piece, it’s still possible to find a similar top. The best bet to find a piece like this is Etsy, an e-commerce website with a focus on handmade or vintage items. We love this extremely similar, but pink, Fuchsia Multi Sequin Butterfly Top from Etsy seller ArsimusCreations ($39.99). In terms of makeup, create matching wisp-like lines above your eye’s crease using a pot liner like Suva Beauty’s hydra liners ($14). Pair the look with long, natural waves and some of your favorite jeans and you are good to go!

Any style icon will tell you to take inspiration from everything you can! Olivia takes inspiration from decades of the past, incorporating bits and pieces from by-gone eras into a modern look. We love the look Olivia wore outside of Buckingham Palace in her Instagram post on May 10. Her typical natural waves are paired with orange tinted glasses, a white crop graphic t-shirt, a long leather duster trench with fur details, black Van sneakers, and of course, eye-catching printed vintage trousers.

Replica glasses can be found through ASOS DESIGN’s square sunglasses with yellow lens in black ($20). While the white crop graphic t-shirt can easily be created using a piece from your closet, if you are looking for an exact piece, Olivia is wearing White Heaven by Marc Jacobs ‘Heavens’ Tartan Logo Baby T-shirt ($75). The long jacket seems like a total thrift store find, but we found a similar piece, Faux Leather Teddy Trim Trench Coat (on sale for $50, but typically $120) from Boohoo. Olivia is also wearing some black Vans Old Skool sneaks ($60). Finally, the piece de resistance, the pants, are JP Gaultier 90s Basquiat print denim, however, the style appears to be currently sold out. A similar style can be found through Nasty Gal, with their High Waisted Retro Floral Flare Pants (typically $43, but on sale for $22).

While much of Olivia’s style is based on being relatable and casual while still being stylish, she still has dressed ultra-glamorous for performances and red carpet appearances. We adore this all red ensemble that she wore at the 2021 BRIT awards. While this look is a custom Dior haute couture, you can totally make a similar look using cheaper, and more easily available, pieces.

The Joyfunear Fringe Sequin Tube Top & Bodycon Skirt set from Shein ($23) has a similar color and texture. Cover up the look with a sheer dress of a similar shade, like Kikiriki’s Sheer Maxi Red Dress for ($52.90). Pair with voluminous curls, silver jewelry, and your favorite going-out heels, you have a look worthy of envy.

While these pieces may not be the most mind-blowing, one thing that Olivia does well is styling staple pieces in a way that makes them feel brand-new and special. Get inspiration from pieces you already have in your closet with Olivia’s style. 90s sunglasses, a white crop tank top, layered necklaces, and cropped high waisted jeans with some black converse; all essentials for any modern wardrobe!

While you likely have these pieces in your closet already, if you don’t, we’ve got you covered. Urban Outfitters’ Sausalito Rectangle Sunglasses in Black ($16) will give you Olivia’s classic cool girl vibe, while a simple Crop Tank Top in White from H&M ($12.99) will keep you relatable. Pair the look with Coin Layered Necklaces from Madewell ($48), Extra High-Waisted Sky Hi Straight Button-Fly Ripped Jeans for Women from Old Navy ($49.99, but on sale now for $30), and some black Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars ($60) and you are ready for any adventure headed your way.

Olivia Rodrigo knows how to celebrate her birthday in style. Emulate this classic black and white polka dot dress for your next birthday, and keep the teenage dream going on for a little longer. This outfit is classy but casual.

Olivia’s dress is actually from Reformation, the Gail Dress in Dot ($278, but currently sold out), but for some of our readers, that price tag may be out of their price range. A cheaper alternative is the ASOS Design ultimate midi tea dress in polka dot ($36). Pair it with the layered necklaces from our last post, as well some edgy boots like some classic 1460 Smooth Leather Lace Up Boots from Dr. Martens ($150).

No matter where you are going, there is an Olivia Rodrigo look for the occasion. Get inspiration from this Gen Z queen for your next event.
