The Marco Marco Spring 2019 show presented by Style Fashion Week this September season was a moment to remember – and let the fashion world grow from. The New York Fashion Week show, which all went down at The Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom over the weekend, featured an all-trans model line-up. That’s right: every single model cast in the production is transgender, and the show celebrated inclusivity at every turn.
Stars like Candis Cayne, Dominique Jackson, Angelica Ross, MJ Rodriguez, Gigi Gorgeous, Trace Lysette, Our Lady J, Geena Rocero, Carmen Carrera, Laith Ashley, and more participated in this season’s extravagant catwalk event, showing off the colorful, sparkling, and sexy pieces from the new collection.
“Collection Seven signifies a milestone not only for the Marco Marco brand, but for fashion, and for our community,” Marco Morante, Founder and Head Fashion Designer of Marco Marco, said in a press statement. “Each year we try to highlight strong and positive influences within the LGBT arena and this year’s cast has proven that time and time again and I’m honored to showcase inspiration in whatever way I can.”
The Marco Marco label has always been supportive of LGBT+ rights, but this NYFW runway show makes a huge statement on one of the industry’s biggest stages.
“Around 2016, trans people started really being included in the major parts of fashion, but we were tokenized,” model Laith Ashley told Them about the changing scene. “They would use one trans person. This person would be everywhere for one season, and after that, they disappeared. You’d never see them again.”
“This is my third time walking for Marco Marco, and I think that he’s always had a super diverse group of people walking his shows,” the model added. “But this sends a message to the fashion industry that they need to take responsibility and actually include us.”
