Popular YouTube beauty guru Kathleen Lights has just announced the latest spring 2018 additions to her rapidly growing KL Polish company! The “Ethereal Garden” collection will be composed of six brand new shades, called Charmed (metallic lavender), Dream Boy (pastel lilac), Gum Would Be Perfection (pastel baby pink), Miss Kensington (mint green), Pinky (pink-toned nude), and Selene (pale pastel yellow).
To celebrate the upcoming launch, Richard Magazine caught up with the 26-year-old makeup maven to hear all about where her new collection is taking her brand. Check out our exclusive Q & A below.
Richard Magazine: Congratulations on your new spring launch! How would you say the your color range an brand have evolved since you first debuted KL Polish?
Kathleen Lights: Oh, absolutely! We first launched with six colors and I knew that I wanted to launch a new collection every season but I had no idea we would be able to do specialty collections like Lips + Tips and my birthday polishes! The brand has evolved so much. We are constantly trying out new content ideas for our YouTube channel and the photos that we release for each collection have exceeded my expectations!
Richard Magazine: Was it challenging to narrow down your color favorites to the 6 hottest shades of the season, or did you already have an idea of the palette you wanted?
Kathleen Lights: I’ve loved and used nail polish for so long, so it’s not hard thinking of shades that I love, but yes it can be really difficult to narrow it down and find six that work well together and go with the season. I generally start with an idea or theme and go from there!
Richard Magazine: We saw that your fans had a part in helping you name some of the new colors. How does your interaction with fans shape your business and your product decisions?
Kathleen Lights: My fans are everything to me! Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. I feel like I’ve created a community on YouTube and that community has followed me to KL Polish. I love interacting with my audience and getting their opinion. After all, they’re the consumers so I want to make sure I’m putting out shades they like!
Richard Magazine: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned since starting your company, whether about business or yourself?
Kathleen Lights: I definitely didn’t realize how difficult it would be to start my own business. There are so many moving parts and things you don’t think about until they come up. There’s been a lot of trial and error involved to get KL Polish to where it is today, but I love every minute of it! And I couldn’t do it without my team.
Richard Magazine: Can you tell us about your spring KL Polish campaign photo shoot: how it came about, and what look you were going for, etc.?
Kathleen Lights: The whole shoot was inspired by Natalie Portman’s Dior campaign. I’ve always loved those photos and since these shades are all very light and spring-like I knew the “ethereal garden” theme would fit perfectly. The outcome was incredible! These are my favorite photos to date.
Richard Magazine: What’s one small change you think someone can make in their everyday beauty routine to give it a little refreshment?
Kathleen Lights: I think it’s important to switch up your routine and try new products and looks. A mix of “full glam” and “natural” is important as well. There are days where I’ll wear full coverage foundation with a smokey eye and then the next day I’ll just put on some tinted moisturizer and mascara. It’s all about balance, like everything else!
Richard Magazine: What are some of your favorite trends that you’re looking forward to trying out yourself this spring?
Kathleen Lights: I think liquid eyeshadows and lip gloss will be huge this season which is exciting! I also love experimenting with brighter eyeshadows and blushes this time of year.
Richard Magazine: What do you think your childhood self would think about everything you’re up to right now?
Kathleen Lights: No way she would have expected this shy girl from Hialeah would get to do so many of the amazing things I get to do. I am truly appreciative of everything and know I couldn’t have gotten here without my fans tuning in to that girl’s first video with terrible lighting.
