The Spring/Summer 2019 collection marks the fifth anniversary of Thailand-based brand Hirun Bangkok by designer Hirun Phromma. This beautiful line made its debut at the Style Fashion Week runway series this September season of New York Fashion Week.
In this collection, the designer blends modern style, the label’s famously classic elegance, and eye-catching detailing crafted from traditional Asian fabrics. After the show, the designer explained he was specifically inspired by the styles worn by different groups of peoples like the Karens, Mien people, and Lisu people.
“Hand-woven cottons and hand-dyed fabrics are popular among Karens used for clothing and hair accessories,” the designer shared on Instagram, offering context for the inspiration. “Nowadays, Karens use bright cottons, threads and stone Job’s tears. Karen females usually classify stone Job’s tears by sizes and shapes and use them to embroider into different patterns onto shawls, head scarves, shirt hems and tote bags, which is considered as another fabric art that adds beauty and uniqueness to Karens’ woven cloth. Karens normally wear three brass rings on their neck starting from the collarbone area to chin area as accessories. Besides, they wear silver bangles made of aluminum and brass rings on their legs. They are also appeared to always have bangs.”

Lisu usually wear black pants and red shin pads. For the shirt. it is long like a gown with a split cut on both sides, usually coming in light green or blue colors. Additionally, they have a rope belt with a tassel in different colors. Around the neck and arm areas, there are stripes coming in various colors embroidered in rainbow shade worn by Lisu’s females. It is mostly decorated with stripes in different colors, silver beads, and sometimes with embroidery on the joint part between the waist belt and the tassel as well as the joint part between a tote bag and a tassel. Even though it is not complicated to manufacture Lisu’s fabric and it comes with a few patterns, it is so unique that it has always been in need in the market of high mountain fabrics as they dare enough to bring bright colours together and they can do it perfectly. The art on their cloth as well as accessories on their clothing can represent a uniquely creative freedom well. In addition, the dress of Mien and Lisu people inspired the silhouettes and color palette for this Spring 2019 range.
“Mien people wear black rough pants where delicate flower patterns are embroidered in the front part. For the upper wear, they wear v-neck shirts that are embroidered with knitting wools in the middle part,” the designer added. “There is normally a side split of the shirt cutting from the waist area. When wearing the shirt, the front and the back parts of the shirt swing apart. Also, they have got a rope to tie and knot it at the back. It is decorated with beautiful flower patterns, and usually worn in a wedding ceremony with exquisite big hair accessories on a head scarf.”
