At first glance, there seem to be several contradictions in the Giambattista Valli Pre-Fall 2018 collection. Athleisure meets high fashion. Dressed-up meets street style. Power boss work suits meets breezy pink dresses.
While flipping through the latest lookbook, you may find that the brand is showcasing sporty, athletic-inspired sweatshirts and cozy track suits quite easily alongside intricately detailed dresses and suit jackets. For Giambattista Valli, this is the way the modern woman approaches dressing.
“It’s modern elegance. I wanted to challenge the notion that you have extreme elegance on the one hand and hoodies on the other, because I love finding common ground between the two,” the designer told WWD about this collection.
“I love everything that is a little eccentric, culturally,” he added at a showroom meeting. “Like my clients, I’m always picking up so many things from all over, so it’s about practicing personal interpretation rather than ‘billboard’ fashion.”
While this collection definitely features its fair share of head-turning ensembles – we’re looking at you, textured lace maxi dresses, tweed blazers, and Parisian-chic trench coats! – the designer himself is not interested in creating shock-value looks. Instead, he’s all about femininity and comfort with his outfits.
“I’m not someone who seeks to create a shocking moment,” Giambattista Valli said. “I’m not a code breaker. I want to create harmonies. When my woman walks into the room, you get to know her little by little.”
