When you are young, all you want to be is a more mature. A little older, a little wiser, a little more capable of making those big life decisions for yourself. And when you get to that magical time of your all-grown-up life? Of course, you know it’s way more complicated than your childhood self ever thought. Then comes the touch of nostalgia for your younger years, and the more frivolous fashion choices you may have once made. The Erdem Resort 2019 collection is all about capturing that multi-generational appreciation, especially when it comes to style references.
Designer Erdem Moralioglu explained that this collection was inspired by the work of photographers Diane Arbus and William Eggleston, with images that portray “older ladies in their Sunday best,” according to WWD. From this visual, the creator imagined little girls playing dress up in their grandmas’ elaborate ensembles, and styled the Resort 2019 (or Pre-Spring/Summer ’19) line with these proportions in mind. “That’s why you see odd loafers, funny hats and pieces that clash, rather than match, but still somehow fit together,” the designer shared with the publication.
Indeed, the collection combines opulent, old-fashioned accessories with the modern luxuries of your dream current wardrobe. The lookbook images themselves are hazy and blurred, and given all the inspiration at work here, we are taking it as a representation of how life can sometimes just flash before your eyes. In an instant, you’re suddenly all grown.
The effect is as if you raided your own grandma’s costume trunk, and pulled out the statement-making pieces filled with enough whimsy to kick up your favorite dresses and suits. Girlhood staples like ribbons and bows are quite literally woven into several designs, reminding us that while aging may be mandatory, “growing up” is surely optional.
