How To Dress Up Denim for Holiday Parties

It’s very likely that you have purchased a pair of dressy jeans at some point because you swore you’d be able to dress them both up and down to fit your every wardrobe need. Sometimes all this is easier said than done. We know that with the help of a nice blouse or a statement jacket, denim styles can be the perfect chic ensemble for any event – and a great party alternative to dresses. This season, we are scoring our own holiday party denim inspiration straight from fashion It Girls’ Instagram accounts. Check out our favorite pro tips below.

Go classic.

The easiest way to transition your wardrobe from the office to the after-party is by investing in some classic fits. You’ll get years of wear out of perfectly-fitting black skinny jeans, or wide-leg styles that mimic the appearance of trousers. With a classic bottom, you can have some fun with your top, adding sparkles, sequins, or patterns to your look.

That being said, you can never go wrong by pairing your dark denim with a crisp white blouse and a slicked-back updo, like Elsa Hosk did here.

Keeping at least one element of your look classic and sophisticated will elevate your entire outfit to new levels!

Select some denim with sparkle.

When it comes to holiday party dressing, your best friends are going to be sparkle and sheen. Wearing eye-catching fabrics on the top or bottom is a sure-fire way to stand out at a soirée. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s own Paige denim collection is full of party-perfect pants, like these shimmering skinnies with a subtle striped pattern.

The added side pocket zipper detailing on Rosie’s denim give her some added edge and flair, and she can pick up on that hardware inspiration with her strappy metallic heels.

Dress up light washes.

If you have ever shied away from wearing lighter wash denims in the evening, know that you can make every pair work with some clever styling. If you want to take a style cue from Beyonce (which is never a bad idea), add an embellished chiffon blouse over your favorite lived-in dungarees for a dramatic statement.

As also evidenced by Alexa Chung, wearing a dark solid on top balances out trendier features, like light whiskering. Choosing a blouse with texture and formal detailing – like this ruffle-sleeve, button-up style – also helps make casual denim appropriate for a more elegant setting.

Crop that top.

Another way to make distressed, light-wash denim feel more fancy is to go all-out-sexy with your top. Lingerie-inspired designs specifically are a favorite among models like Emily Ratajkowski.

Paired with a tassled clutch and a spaghetti strap top, this look is party-ready. For a little more coverage without sacrificing any of the style, consider adding a sleek blazer, oversized jacket, or mesh top on over a luxe bralette.

Bonus points if, like Imaan Hammam, you can mix denim washes!

Winter whites.

You may think it is easiest to make black jeans more formal, but stars like Kate Bosworth prove you can make any color denim work for a night out. This holiday season, why not give winter whites a try?

One way to pull off this look is to opt for a monochromatic style from head to toe and pop your outfit with bold accessories.

Or, add some color, texture, and shine to your top while keeping your accessories in the same neutral palette as your white skinnies, like Taylor Hill.

Add some retro flair.

Cropped and frayed denim may be an off-duty model’s favorite casual look, but with the right pair of heels, this denim fit can be transformed into an Old Hollywood-inspired party outfit.

We’re forever inspired by the way Zendaya gave her capris a vintage makeover with her white pumps, elegant updo, and sweetheart neckline top.

With this many ways to style your jeans, you may never rock opaque tights at a cocktail party again!
