Dior Unveils Dance-Inspired Spring 2019 Collection on Paris Fashion Week Runways

The Dior Spring 2019 event this Paris Fashion Week was more than just your standard runway show: it was a performance of style. For this breathtaking new collection, designer and creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri was inspired by the world of dance and the art of movement. With that idea in mind, a fluid and flowing collection of powerful garments was presented against an active dance performance at the ParisLongchamp Racecourse.

“Dance is at this collection’s heart. Dance as a liberating act, an action of the body, a dimension that uses rhythm, movement and music to connect with the deepest part of our being,” the brand shared in a press release. “Dance and fashion define the body and, through discipline, teach us to own it.”

Maria Grazia Chiuri specifically drew inspiration from the works of several “heroines of contemporary dance,” including performers like Loïe Fuller, Isadora Duncan, Ruth Saint Denis, Martha Graham, and Pina Bausch.

“The experience of dance, its most intimate truth, the fact that it is a means of universal expression, and the radicality of the gestures of contemporary dance have all stimulated my imagination,” the designer shared in a statement.

The collection itself is composed of several layer-able pieces. As a base, there are sleek bodysuits, tanks, and light jumpsuits – especially in pretty nude shades – that echo dance wear and ballerina-off-duty styles. Long, flowing skirts – and even tutu-inspired pieces – are their perfect complements. Tulle-enhanced dresses, colorful slips, theatrical coats, and braided ribbon shoes takes the stage inspiration to the next level.

“The choreography of the bodies, and the bond that unites them, echoing the movement of the stars in the celestial vault, evokes the energy of the universe from which dance draws its expressions,” the brand shared. “Energy that lies simultaneously in the control and the liberation of the body. Energy that is both rigorous discipline and extreme freedom. The energy that produced this collection like a sophisticated and stylish piece of choreography, and a powerful explosion of the female imagination.”

Many of the fashion industry’s biggest trendsetters journeyed to France to catch this beautiful showcase live in person. Of course, there was a star-studded front row. International stars like Blake LivelyShailene WoodleyMelissa BenoistChiara Ferragni, Eva Herzigová, Beatrice Vio, Kong Hyo Jin, Camille Rowe, and many more were spotted taking in Dior’s latest designs at the September season event.
