The Coach brand has been all about paying tribute to New York lately: the people, the art, the city’s cultural and fashionable influence over the years. And for the Coach Pre-Fall 2018 season, the brand combines this inspiration with the fantastical, enchanted Disney universe.
The New York City inspiration is vividly apparent across several seasons of Coach’s latest showings. In fact, Creative Director Stuart Vevers described the inspiration behind this Coach 1941 collection as “an American-gothic fairy tale born of New York.” Color us intrigued. But if you loved Coach’s previous Disney collaboration that featured a Mickey Mouse theme, then you’ll likely flip over the Snow White inspiration adding a touch of whimsy to this line.
Tiny woodland creatures and poison apple motifs are embroidered onto some of the most colorful garments in the collection, and incorporated into the season’s graphic print knitwear. The brand’s handbag key tabs even carry the names of the Seven Dwarves. Moto jackets and chic vests with intricate detailing and patchwork make this Disney princess inspiration tougher and darker.
But of course, Coach’s inspiration also comes from another source with Disney ties – their mega-popular celebrity spokesmodel, Selena Gomez. The leather goods label is seeing a great resurgence of interest in their designs because of this star collaboration. The singer also influences their styling even when she’s not the face of a particular campaign.
“I often ask myself, ‘What would Selena wear?’” Stuart Vevers told WWD about his creative process. We imagine that there would be a lot for Selena to love in this playful-meets-edgy collection.
