The launch of the Chanel Cruise 2018 collection is almost upon us, and we couldn’t be more excited about this internationally inspired collection. The luxury brand’s latest line – coming soon to boutiques – is called “The Modernity of Antiquity,” and it is influenced by the beauty, dress, and history of ancient Greece.
For this cruise season, the brand’s classic textured tweed was reimagined in dusty and muted pastel shades. Opulent gold elements detail many of the collection’s elegantly draped Grecian silhouettes. Plus, the feel of gladiator sandals was created by creatively adding lace-up straps to all the colorful high-heeled footwear shown on the runway.
“I see Greece as the origin of beauty and culture, where there was a wonderful freedom of movement that has since vanished,” fashion house creative director Karl Lagerfeld said. “The criteria of beauty in ancient, then classical, Greece still holds true. There have never been more beautiful representations of women. Or more beautiful columns. The entire Renaissance, in fact, was based on Antiquity. It is really about the youth of the world in all its power and unpredictability — just like the unforgiving gods.”
The modern-meets-historical vibe you feel from viewing the collection is exactly what Lagerfeld was going for. “I’m suggesting going back to move forward. To create the future, you have to pay attention to the past,” he said of the aim for these pieces. He also shared that he is most inspired by the magic behind ancient Greece, sharing: “[The collection] had nothing to do with a country. Reality is of no interest to me. I use what I like. My Greece is an idea.”
During Chanel’s Cruise 2018 runway show, the brand actually transformed the entire location, The Grand Palais, into a scene out of Greek mythology, complete with ancient ruins and iconic architecture. It was the perfect backdrop for the latest collection’s designs, showing off their timeless beauty.
