Brittany Allen, the talented fashion designer who heads up Brittany Nicole, is a pattern-maker. She loves a good textured print or intricate plotted motif. And this love for unique fabrics and stylish graphic design has brought her far, all the way from a BS in Human Environmental Sciences back in Arkansas to the runway at NYFW. You can feel the organic charm of Middle America in her designs, particularly the one on display at this year’s Style Fashion Week. She started almost rustic with each model carrying a transparent handbag-like container of forest blossoms and checked prints evoking farm dresses. As the collection continued, more aggressive elements made an appearance, most notably a creamy silk jumpsuit, wide leg pants, and brilliant neon pink. There were also slogan dresses, sporting the social-charged message: Female Is The Face Of The Future. Yet, despite the variety, the tone of this whole show retained a sense of around town ease, easily celebrating Allen’s Arkansas and Texas roots. A little tip you can incorporate right away from this fashion show? Invest in a cute pair of cat’s eye rims. Bespectacled chic and modern Southern belles are clearly coming back. Vibrant and elaborate without ever feeling too unapproachable, Brittany Nicole’s summer collection always felt grounded despite an impressive range of color and style. A full-time professor in Austin, Brittany Allen certainly taught us a thing or two about what to wear this coming spring.
